Languages

At Our Lady’s, we believe learning another language opens doors to new ways of thinking, communicating, and understanding the world. Our Languages Other Than English (LOTE) program contributes to students’ cognitive development, encouraging skills in critical thinking, reflection, and intercultural awareness.

Our students in Years 3 – 6 are immersed in the Italian language, learning not only how to speak, read and write, but also gaining insights into Italian culture, traditions, food, music, and family life. Through songs, games, storytelling, and interactive experiences, students develop their communication skills while building respect and appreciation for another culture and its people.

In addition to Italian, our school also provides opportunities for students to be introduced to Auslan (Australian Sign Language). This supports inclusive communication, strengthens students’ awareness of the Deaf community, and fosters empathy and understanding of diverse ways of connecting with others.

Learning languages at Our Lady’s equips students to become confident, respectful and globally minded citizens, ready to engage with the rich diversity of the world around them.
